Bio

Jeff Newton

Jazz saxophonist & pianist from detroit

Detroit was the incubator for Jeff Newton, a virtuoso Jazz saxophonist who doubles on piano / keyboards instead of the usual flute, clarinet, etc.  Jeff's playing has been praised by several prominent Jazz musicians in recent years during his time in New York City.  a retired lawyer, Jeff's playing offers cohesiveness, incisive wit and true thematic spontaneous composition.

Jeff Newton is a veteran Detroit (Motown) bred and nurtured Jazz saxophonist and doubler on piano and keyboards. Some of Jeff's teachers and mentors were the famous "Funk Brothers" who created all the great Motown sounds.   In sharp contrast to the hordes of "Jazz college" graduates loudly chasing the tails of Bird and Coltrane, Jeff has created his own Jazz vocabulary, comprised of all his influences:  early listening to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass as a little kid, mid-60's Burt Bacharach & a.m. radio pop hits, late 60's Vietnam War protest songs, "Classic Rock" before it was "classic," early Jazz fusion, and only then, be-bop and "straight ahead" Jazz.  Simply put, Jeff is not a "clone" of anyone (even though he's studied nearly all of them).
